Before leaving Ambleside i found a nice little deli, open on Sunday morning, so that sorted the next few days! the good thing about going to a deli is you can ask for quite small amounts of cheese, you might even get offered tasters!
Out on the town again! Celebrating a birthday over in Ambleside, Friday night in Dodds Restaurant which is well worth sitting at the tiny bar and waiting for a table, lovely salt and pepper squid. On Saturday we all went vegetarian with a trip to Zeffirellis, amazing how many people are out and about in the Lakes even in January. People should think about the Western valleys, a lot less people about at this time of year.
Now we are talking, real Cumbrian cheese from Thornby Moor Dairy on the road up towards Carlisle, if you like cheese then this is a place to visit, no mass production here, and it shows in this semi soft rich creamy cheese 2:1 cow to goat milk. Best cheese so far.
Feeling like a laughing stock, is it really cheese, apparently so, along with Dairylea, my daughter tries to live off it! Anyway needs must, the fridge was a little bare, not of cheese, just of cheese I have not eaten yet this year!
From that there Aldi again, crumbly Lancashire, one of my favorites, perfect on a digestive biscuit.
Yammas Feta Cheese, perfect for a Greek salad, but nice thinly sliced on toast too.
A first time cheese for me, but I will need to try it again as it was incorporated into a sauce in an Italian restaurant called La Fontana . Great little restaurant if you find yourself in Blackpool.
I like this, a nice hard white sheeps milk cheese from Spain, via Aldi.. It has a lovely almost fizzy tang on the tongue! Easy to pair this with a a drop of single malt Caol Ila.
This will not be the last Brie style cheese to feature on this list, makes a good Brie and bacon sandwich on homemade foccacia bread at Brook House Inn!
