Castello with spring onion and chives

Grandma Singletons strong Lancashire
Simple lunch of Cheese and apple salad with Hoisin and spring onion dressing. Excellent flavourful Lancashire cheese, creamy, not too hard and with a lovely tang.
At last a lovely Cumbrian blue cheese and whisky
Time for my first mini cheese road trip. It was a bit grim out so was not planning to go far, after a bit of googling it soon became clear that West Cumbria is not well endowed with cheese makers or cheese shops for that matter!
I decided to head to Broughton in Furness and try Melville Tyson’s which is a great village butcher and grocery, but I wasn’t sure if it had a cheese counter.
I like Broughton, it has some lovely pubs including the great #Manor which always has large range of real ales and is a very traditional pub.
Back to the cheese and I was happy to find a well stocked fridge with a helpful young man willing to cut small slices for me to buy.
So I now have a weeks supply of new cheeses, in fact all completely un tried by me! This is where this whole idea starts to get interesting.
So what do I think of Grandma Singleton’s cracked pepper cheddar. At first it feels like the cheese is totally overwhelmed by the pepper, but then a little bit of creamy cheddar flavour comes through, followed by a lovely warm felling from the heat of the pepper. If you don’t like pepper you are not going to like this!
No picture today, I am worried I am driving people to the fridge. Quite enjoyed the very mildly flavoured Port Salut, available from Gosforth stores.
A real throwback cheese! This was the height of foreign luxury cheese (in our house) in the early 1980’s! Back from the Ship or the Plough by 11.25pm and time for cheese and biscuits and a cup of Nescafé. Now I was quite looking forward to this, but as it happens, it was a little disappointing! Certainly not man enough for the glass of Ardbeg I was going to pair it with. Still having the Ardbeg though
Lovely Brie like cheese, creamy and white, nicest of the little selection of Castello, just shows simple is often best. I am going to add the cheese to tonight’s tea, dinner, supper, evening meal, depending where you are reading this!
That was lovely, now what’s for pudding?
Castello with Pineapple!
So what late evening beverage would best accompany this fruity concoction? I really can’t see it matching with whisky, so I think the tall blue bottle will have to come out of the cupboard. It’s tequila time!
Time to go Dutch! First time cheese for me, comes in handy slices so no knife required. Big holes in the cheese so the slices weight less, mind you if you then put 2 slices on your sandwich… Quite a pleasant cheese for something pre sliced, especially on homemade bread with salad cream and tomato. Supplied by The Aldi.
